What To Do About Fallen Trees After A Hurricane

Blog

When a hurricane hits land, it leaves a lot of destruction in its wake. One of the most common types of destruction that it leaves in its wake is fallen trees. Fallen trees can cause other damages in their wake as well, leading to home and property damage.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Once a tree falls on your property, you will want to get out your camera and document the damage. You will want to call your insurance company and see if this damage will be covered.

If the tree was already diseased or dying, they might hold you as negligent in taking care of the tree, and you will have to deal with paying to remove the tree yourself. If they find that the tree is in good shape and you couldn't have prevented it from falling down, then your insurance company will cover the cost of removing the tree. It is always smart to call your insurance provider first to see if they will take care of the tree.

Call a Tree Company

The other thing you will want to do is call a tree company. The sooner you can call after a hurricane, the better. They will be getting a lot of calls, and you are going to want to get your name on the list right away after a big storm goes through your area.

You are going to want to work with a tree company. They will have the right equipment to remove the tree without causing additional damage to your property. They know how to chop up a tree safely to protect everyone.

In addition, they will take away the debris from the tree if you do not want to handle it on your own. They can haul away all the parts of the tree, from the branches to the trunk, so you don't have to deal with any more clean-up.

Create Access for the Tree Company

Try to create access for the tree company to remove the tree without putting yourself at risk. That may mean moving your vehicles out of the way so they can get their equipment as close to the tree as possible. If there is other storm debris that may get in the way of the tree, and you can safely move it, you can do so. However, if you are unsure of the safety of moving something, wait until you have help.

After a hurricane, call your insurance company and make a claim if you have trees that fell on your property. Then, put in a call to a local tree removal company so they can safely remove the tree from your property. Give the tree company the best possible access to your property to make the tree removal process easy for them.

A Tree For Every Yard

Elm, ash, walnut, maple, apple — these are all gorgeous trees, but they all have their own preferences in terms of care. Maple trees, for example, need to be pruned later in the season once their sap has begun flowing. Elm trees should be pruned in winter when insects aren't around in order to protect them from the emerald ash borer. A good tree care company will treat each of your trees as individuals, customizing care to their own specific needs. Still, it's important that you, as the tree owner, understand those needs, too. Read the articles on your website, and you'll soon have a pretty good grasps on the basics of tree care.
